How to deal with unrequited love

So you want to know how to deal with unrequited love. It’s not always easy when we love someone or think we love someone and they don’t love us back. It can be very hard to deal with this kind of rejection, as well as your feelings if they linger but go unreciprocated.  If you are dealing with such feelings, then it’s important to take several steps in addressing them in order to get over the feelings of rejection and regain control of your emotions.  Here are a few simple tips to help you start.

Write About Your Feelings

Though this sounds simple, writing about your feelings can be a great way to help you sort through them.  It is also a way for you to express your frustrations and maybe even flush out some of your own feelings that you may not have recognized or fully understood.  Sometimes you may feel the target of your unrequited love is not seeing you for who you really are, and writing about your feelings is a good way to express the real you clearly.

Keep an Open Mind

It is a fine line between romanticism and harassment, and many walk that line at least a time or two in their life.  Be prepared for the possibility of the other person to change and realize your feelings.  They may turn around and change their tune.  Be equally as prepared for them not to, and that your perception of love may really just be a need of yours that is not getting fulfilled.  Being open can help you recognize the difference.

Date New People

Just because your heart may be somewhere else doesn’t mean you can’t date others.  Dates are just fun encounters with other people and if you just go for something casual or small, you may realize that your love is misdirected, or it may actually confirm it.

Get Set Up on Blind Dates

Getting set up on a blind date through friends or services can be thrilling and fun.  Though it may not find you the love of your life or a person that you want to have a relationship with, it may improve your social skills and get your mind off what’s bothering you.  When people see you out and having fun, it’s contagious.

Write Down What it is You Want in a Relationship

This can really help you get to the root of your desires and needs.  Sometimes you may even surprise yourself with what you write down!  This exercise can be great in helping you get to the root of why you love that person, or perhaps show you that you really may not.

It’s difficult to change or ignore your emotions, sometimes we can be stubborn and feel that if we let go of a person, it may be a missed opportunity or chance we’ll never have again.  It’s important to keep those feelings alive and open, but also challenge them by experiencing life from a different angle.  More often then not, you’ll find that new experiences will wash away emotions that you may have misconstrued for love. Can you think of any other ways for how to deal with unrequited love?
